Hair oiling is one of the best-known Ayurvedic hair-care practices. Done simply, it can make the scalp feel conditioned and help reduce the dry, rough feel of hair. The key is using the right amount and not treating oil as a cure for every type of hair loss.
Step 1: Start with dry or slightly damp hair
Oil can be used on dry hair before shampooing. If your scalp is very oily or prone to buildup, use less product and focus more on the lengths.
Step 2: Use a small amount
You do not need to saturate the scalp. Place a small amount of oil on your fingertips and apply it in sections. Add more only if needed.
Step 3: Massage gently
Use the pads of your fingers rather than your nails. Massage lightly for several minutes. Vigorous rubbing can tangle the hair and may increase breakage.
Step 4: Leave it on for a practical amount of time
For many people, 20 to 60 minutes before washing is enough. Leaving oil on overnight is optional, not required. People with dandruff, scalp acne or a very oily scalp may prefer shorter contact time.
Step 5: Wash the scalp well
Use a suitable cleanser and rinse thoroughly. The Akshira Ayurveda Keshakahi Hair Cleanser can be paired with the Akshira Keshakahi Hair Oil as part of the same hair-care routine.
How often should you oil?
One or two times a week may be enough for many people, while others may prefer less. Let your scalp guide you. Itching, worsening flakes, bumps or a greasy scalp are signs to reduce the amount or frequency.
What if your concern is hair fall?
Oiling can support the feel and condition of the hair, but it cannot correct every cause of shedding. If you are losing much more hair than usual, read our guide on hair fall in women and consider speaking with a clinician.
Note: Stop using a product if it causes irritation, burning or a rash.
